Greenwich High School Student Launches GreenCardinal DAO, Seeks to Build Blockchain-Enabled Community Focused on Helping Local Environmental Groups
NEWS PROVIDED BYGreenCardinal DAO September 8, 2022, 7:00 ET
GREENWICH, Connecticut, September 8, 2022 – Alex Palmer, a senior at Greenwich High School, today announced the launch of GreenCardinal DAO, a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that he hopes will serve as an example of how students can raise funds to provide grants to local environmental groups by leveraging blockchain technology, cryptocurrency, and the ability of the unique DAO organizational structure to create a virtual community.
Palmer first became interested in environmental issues as a junior high school student when he learned about the worldwide honeybee colony collapse and the human-driven factors that have contributed to it. More recently, he developed an interest in crypto and blockchain technology after reading a book on the subject and then going online to learn everything he could about it.Now, as a 17-year-old preparing to start his senior year in high school, Palmer has found a new way to channel his interests in the environment and cryptocurrency: by founding GreenCardinal DAO as part of an independent study project.
GreenCardinal DAO will raise funds through the sale of its GRCRD crypto tokens, the buyers of which will have the ability to vote on which environmental organizations in Greenwich and Connecticut they would like to receive grants from the DAO’s shared Ethereum wallet.
“One of my favorite expressions is ‘Think Globally, Act Locally,’ because it tells people to think about the whole planet, and then to take action in their own communities,” Palmer said. “Thanks to blockchain technology, GreenCardinal DAO can tap into a global community and then use that reach to hopefully make a difference in the environment here in Connecticut.”
Palmer said he has been in contact with representatives of environmental organizations in the Greenwich area who had been receptive to the idea of receiving grants from GreenCardinal DAO that could be used to fund their efforts. Ultimately, the organizations that receive grants from the DAO will be proposed and voted upon by its token holders.
At the same time, Palmer said he would be particularly interested in finding a local environmental organization engaged in projects aimed at preserving the local honeybee population that could be proposed to the GreenCardinal DAO community as a potential grant recipient. He noted that Connecticut’s honeybee population in recent years had an annual die-off rate even higher than the national rate, which has averaged between 30% and 45%.
Given the vital role that honeybees play in pollinating crops, such die-off rates are a major concern, Palmer said. While bees have been dying off at unsustainable rates throughout the world, he believes his best chance of making a difference on the issue would be to bring focus to it at the local level. As such, Palmer said he would like to see the GreenCardinal DAO community extend a grant to a local organization with an interest in helping to address the honeybee mortality issue.
